It’s been a while since I’ve taken a road trip for photography, the trip this time was to explore and capture the Isle of Skye. However the weekend was challenging as the weather took a turn for the worse leaving it cold, wet, grey and with poor light for most of it. Undeterred with the weather situation, armed with waterproofs and good banter we made the most of it.
As usual with the road trips it was an early start on the road for 7am, with no rush the plan was take the trip nice and easy and where possible capture some photos along the way.
First stop was Queens view over Loch Tummel, It’s thought that when Queen Victoria visited in 1866, she assumed that the sweeping view offering a magnificent vista over the loch with Schiehallion in the background was named after her but she was wrong. it’s thought the view was really named after Queen Isabella, the first wife of Robert the Bruce, who lived more than 500 years earlier.
From Queens view we doubled back slightly in order to check out the falls of Dochart, The Bridge of Dochart, first constructed in 1760, crosses the river at Killin offering a view of the falls as they cascade over the rocks and around the island of Inchbuie, which is the ancient burial place of the MacNab clan. Definitely a location i’ll revisit when the weather is better.
Moving on from Killin, the journey continued west with next photo opportunity coming at Achnambeithach Cottage situated on Loch Achtriochtan as we headed towards Glen Coe, the image below was taken just beside the loch.
As we continued through Glen Coe the weather broke for a short spell and looking back over Loch Leven the with blue skies the Pap of Glen Coe was looking like the next shot to take.
Leaving Glen Coe we pressed on and again took a slight detour with the weather breaking to taking the amazing views over Loch Duich towards the five sisters of Kintail.
Next up was Skye where over the next few days we traveled the length and breadth of the island Stopping off at Portree, Dunvegan, The old man of Storr, The Quiraing, Elgol, Sligachan, the Fairy Pools at Glen Brittle and much more. Some of the images below are from these locations
The last shot of the trip was taken after a 5 hour delay in crossing the Skye Bridge due to the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo – Eilean Donan Castle
As you can see Skye has a stunning landscape and the road there shares some amazing scenery, I’m looking forward to the next photography outing and hope to get back to Skye Soon.
